API 5L seamless steel line pipe can be supplied in both PSL1 and PSL2.The difference is not only in the grade designation. It also affects testing, traceability, inspection scope, and release documentation, which is why PSL selection should be confirmed early in the project review process.

For more demanding service, especially in onshore or offshore transmission systems with stricter inspection and certification requirements, PSL2 is commonly specified with tighter control over product qualification and release. Where H2S-corrosive environments are involved, sour service requirements should be clearly defined before production so that the pipe grade, testing route, and document package can be matched to the service conditions.

Seamless API 5L line pipe is usually chosen when the project needs a pipe body without a longitudinal weld seam, especially in pressure-sensitive service, critical transmission sections, or line systems where inspection, fatigue behavior, and overall wall continuity matter more than lowest first cost. It is also a practical choice when the buyer wants one product route that can cover carbon steel line pipe duty, PSL differentiation, and selected sour-service requirements within the same procurement logic. Seamless is typically stronger in industrial applications involving smaller and medium diameters, special lengths, and services where pipe body consistency is more closely controlled.
